To ring in the new year in the library, we have subscribed to an online book collection called "TumbleBooks!" Beginning January 1st, students can access the books through the library's website with Riverdale's username and password.
(Username is: riverdale, Password is: raccoon)
These books can be accessed and used at school as well as at home! Click Here to get to TumbleBooks! Enjoy!
This time of year reminds us to be super thankful of our WONDERFUL library volunteers! Without their help with shelving, bulletin boards, and other tasks we wouldn't be able to run as smoothly! We really appreciate your help!
Classes and Statistics
In the month of November, we met with 86 classes and small groups of kids! In addition, our media clerk circulated books with 21 classes and 31 small groups. All of these numbers average out to meeting the needs of more then 7 classes per day! We circulated 3,632 that month as well! We've recently worked with 3rd grade on their country research and PowerPoint projects, 4th and 5th graders on book reviews in our Destiny catalog, and 2nd graders in writer's workshop, creating wordles, and e-mailing letters to Santa! We've had a great time teaching and learning alongside our fabulous students!
Parent Accounts Available
If you are interested in checking out books from the Riverdale Library, we'd be happy to create an account for you! You may check out up to 10 additional titles at a time for your family to use at home. Please stop by and see us if you are interested!
BOB News
Our Battle of the Books after school club is in full swing! We are reading through our 10 books and writing questions to use for practice later in the year. We created a wordle to be displayed on our team tee-shirts, which are at the print shop as we speak! Look for BOB members wearing their shirts on meeting days!
New titles!
We have received the first shipments of new books for the year! We have about 400 new books and about 150 more on the way. Many of these titles are new non-fiction books focusing on cultures, traditions, and religions around the world. In addition, we have ordered some high interest fiction (Diary of a Wimpy Kid!), graphic novels, sports books, arts and craft books, and a handful of new "I Can Read" titles. Come in and check out the new books on display!

December Library News!
December is upon us and the library continues to be grateful to be an integral piece to supporting instruction within the walls of Riverdale Elementary! Here are some highlights from the library in October and November!
* We have worked with third graders on their country research! Using World Book Kids (an online encyclopedia) and books, students found key pieces of information about their countries. They have become true experts as they were then responsible for teaching their classmates about their country in a PowerPoint presentation!
* We have read aloud some Colorado Childrens' Book Award nominated titles to preschoolers and kindergartners. They sure are enjoying the variety of interesting stories up for the awards this year!
* We have worked with fourth graders on Colorado animal research and creating their final products, which are called glogs! Glogs are online posters and you can see the links to the students' work through the "Student Work Gallery" on the Riverdale Library website. They have done a wonderful job using this really creative technology tool!
* Mr. Freeman's fifth graders and Mrs. Vollmar's fourth graders will be adding book reviews to our library's catalog, called Destiny, soon. They have read books for their book projects and are willing to help us pilot this cool new feature on our library catalog. Look for their reviews as a part of the book descriptions soon!
* Wordles (word clouds) were created with Mrs. Robinson's second graders in the tech lab using important social studies vocabulary words and great endings to personal narrative writing was explored with Ms. Zoeller's second graders in their classroom.
* In the month of October, the librarian met with an average of 4.7 classes per day, totaling 66 for the month. To illustrate that the job of a librarian has an impact on the technology use by students and staff, it is noteworthy to mention that 30% of these classes have taken place in the computer lab. :)
Students continue to visit us on a regular basis, both with their class and individually, to ensure that they always have interesting reading material for school and at home! Thanks to Mrs. Bonnie Watson, our wonderful media clerk, who handles the bulk of the circulation and manages student accounts! We couldn't accomplish our Power Library goals if it weren't for such a wonderful media clerk in the library! Thanks to Miss Bonnie we saw an average circulation on 211 per day books in the month of October with a total of 2956 items checked out in the month!
New books!
We will soon be receiving one of our first large orders of new books for the school year! With about 350 new books to choose from, we are sure to have many new books to match to many different readers at Riverdale. We display our new books on the "new book shelf" near the entrance to the library. Come check them out!
Battle of the Books
We have 22 participants who are beginning the extra-curricular book club referred to as B.O.B.! Ms. Dolan and Mrs. Lott are excited to begin reading the selected ten titles and getting to know these fifth grade readers in setting outside of the school day!

Visiting Author in January!
We are excited to announce that Justin Matott will be our visiting author on January 25, 2011! Our book fair profits will help pay for his visit which includes a school-wide assembly and smaller group workshops. If you are interested in ordering any of his books as holiday gifts before his visit, we have forms in the library and can help place the orders! See us if you are interested!
We wish you a happy and safe holiday season...with LOTS of reading over the winter break! Thanks for your time in reading our blog!

November Library News!
It is pretty amazing to think that November is just around the corner! With that in mind, we'd like to look back on September and October and share some important happenings with you--our Riverdale Community!
Book Fair
We are thrilled to report the success of the fall book fair in the library! We not only met our goal of selling 650 books, we exceeded it by over 50! On conference day alone, we sold over 400 books! This fact excites us...not only because it benefits the library as a fund raiser, but because it gets books into the hands of kids and motivates them to read! This year, we had our first Grandparent event as a part of the book fair! We had about 20 families attend and took lots of great pictures! Please see the slide show on our "Special Events" page!
We couldn't have been this successful without our WONDERFUL volunteers! Thanks to: Debbie Vieth, Luisa Essebaggers, Lynn Calhoun, Kathy Henson, Patty Martinez, Michelle Hawkins, Felicia Losli, Mrs. Gurule, Frank and Jeanne Clements, Naomi Campbell, and Hannah Page for helping with all of the details which made it all a success! And special thanks to Mrs. Huot for the fantastic Super Hero decorations we borrowed as well!
With about $5,300 in total sales, our school is able to keep over $1,300 in profits from the book fair! This year we will be using the funds to host a visiting author as well as purchase new books--of course! :) Since we met our goal, we celebrated by having a "Mismatch Day" on October 22nd. Hopefully we will have some interesting photos to follow!
Notable Statistics
In September, we circulated 3,384 items, averaging 199 books per day! In addition, we met with 63 classes for instruction and circulated books with 19 classes and 22 small groups throughout the month, averaging out to just over 6 classes per day! Another way to view this statistic is that we impacted at least 2,050 students (not counting the walk-in students we see each day) through instruction or by providing resources! We love being an integral piece in teaching and learning in the building!
Instructional Highlights
This month, we have enjoyed working with first graders on a fun writing project! We used two mentor texts to help the students learn about describing words and how to organize a paragraph. From their Kidspiration-generated web, each student wrote a five sentence paragraph about themselves. To top it off, the students then created a self portrait in the computer lab with their teachers and Mrs. Jennings--our OUTSTANDING art teacher! These are pieces of writing that the students are surely proud of! The library has also been busy working with 4th and 5th graders on animal research and creating Glogs (online posters) to showcase what they have learned. We are all gaining 21st Century skills as we learn about these great new web tools available to students and teachers. We've assisted the intermediate grades with selecting titles for their book projects this month as well. Thanks to all staff members who seek to collaborate with the library staff and help us stay connected!
Power Library Recognition at School Board Meeting
Riverdale Elementary is recognized by the state of Colorado as a Developing Power Library School! This means that the teacher librarian works closely with a team of teachers and administrators to ensure that the library program has a strong focus on impacting student achievement within the building. On October 21, 2010, all Power Libraries in Adams 12 were recognized at the school board meeting. What an honor it was for Mrs. Lott and Mrs. Bonnie Watson to be a part of the 25 Power Library Schools recognized! Adams 12 continues to boast the highest percentage of Power Libraries among the school districts across Colorado. And...we celebrate Hulstrom K-8 who has earned the distinguished honor of Colorado State Library of the Year! Way to go!
We wish you a November filled with happy reading! Please feel free to stop by the Riverdale Library--we love visitors!

Off and Running!
We are well into September now, and in the Riverdale Library we are off and running! We have been busy with teaching children how to select "just right" or "good fit" books from the library, as well as using our Destiny Quest Catalog to find the materials they need in the library. We have our first few projects started for the year! They include: Zoo Animal Research with Mrs. Walp's Class (We will teach the students how to create a Glog as their final product!), Caldecott Illustrator Research with Mr. Freeman's Class and Mrs. Jennings, and a Kidspiration Project using student names with first graders. We LOVE working with students to impact their learning in 21st Century ways! That is why we are here!
We are also busy meeting with classes to circulate books on a regular basis. On average in August, we checked out 216 books per day! We are looking forward to analyzing the September statistics to see a summary of our work with teachers and students.
Looking ahead, we will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair from October 8th-15th. This year's theme celebrates our heros...from SuperHeros to everyday heros in our lives, we are excited to explore this theme! Students will have the opportunity to preview the book fair with their classes on Thursday, October 7th or Friday, October 8th. Teachers will also be invited to preview the books on Friday Morning before school. They will also get to enjoy a bite of breakfast this morning--compliments of a grant from our WONDERFUL PTO Members!!!
Book Fair Hours are as follows:
After preview day, students who have money to spend are welcome in the library throughout the day with their teacher's permission. (On a side note, students will be able to return library books during the book fair, however, we will not be checking out new books during this special event.) We will be open a few minutes before and after school as well.
We welcome parent volunteer help anytime in the library, but especially during book fair time! If you are interested in helping us out, please stop in, call, or e-mail us! 720.972.5588 or dana.r.lott@adams12.org We'd love to have your help!
The money we raise with this event will help pay for an incredible visit from a nationally known author at the end of January, as well as books for the library for all to enjoy! We will be having contests and fun prizes throughout Book Fair Week to get our Riverdale students excited about reading. Look for more information to come home as the BIG event gets closer!
As ALWAYS, thank you for your support of the Riverdale Library!

Riverdale Library Expectations Glog
Please click here to see the Glog for Riverdale Library Expectations. These were shared with students on the PBS rotation day as well as touched on during their library orientation lessons. We focused on the school-wide areas of Respecting Self, Others, and Property for our poster. To view all text within a text box, hover in that area and a scroll bar will appear. You can then scroll down to see all of the text. Thanks for taking a peek!

The Riverdale Library is "Open for Business!"
We just finished the first full week of school with great success! We met with all 17 classes of Kindergarten through 5th grade students for a library orientation and check out session! (Please note: Kindergartners will check out their first books in the coming two weeks.) We are happy to report that we circulated 1,081 items in this first week! Whew, we gave our Destiny system a workout!
Students each have an individual pass that they are expected to have with them when they are in the library checking out books, using computers, playing games, or for other reasons. (Please note: Students do not need their pass if they are only returning books.) We are encouraging students to try and fill in their entire passes throughout the school year. That equals 40 visits for 2nd-5th graders and 60 visits for Kindergartners and 1st graders. We believe this is a realistic goal if they us visit once or twice each week throughout the school year. I sure enjoyed seeing the kids again, meeting new students, and reading aloud a library-related book to each class!

Wright Farms Library Opening a Success!

The new Wright Farms branch of the Anythink Libraries (formerly Rangeview Library District) opened on Saturday, July 10th! It is located off of 120th and Holly and is a beautiful addition to the community! In its first week of operations, 2,500 library cards were issued and 30,000 items were checked out! Opening day festivities were fabulous! Each library patron received a new bag to tote books back and forth with bookmarks and pencils included. There was a string quartet playing to set a fun mood for the grand opening. The children could participate in a flag making activity, Madcap Theater did an Improv act on the Freedom of Speech, and the day ended with a concert on the main lawn. Other activities happened throughout the afternoon after the ribbon cutting at 1:30 as well.
A few stats on the new library:
* size of building-45,000 square feet
* cost of construction-$15,700,000
* new items purchased for this library-63,000
* parking lot spaces-148
If you haven't visited this wonderful new community resource, please plan to soon! It is amazing! If you need any information on the new library, the Riverdale Library staff would be happy to help! :)

Riverdale Elementary Receives a Grant!

In the Spring of 2010, The Adams 12 Education Foundation graciously awarded Riverdale Elementary with a technology grant that will provide 9 STAR Carts to the building, enabling us to have one in each K-5 classroom (plus a few others in the building)! A STAR Cart consists of a Dell Latitude Netbook computer, an LCD Projector, document camera, and a speaker on a moveable cart. This set up enables teachers to access immeasurable amounts of presentation features to their teaching on a daily basis. It is our hope that students will be able to interact with the technology tools in the classrooms regularly as well. We are very grateful for this grant and the STAR Carts will be utilized each day in the building.
Mrs. Lott and Ms. Zoeller as well as her second grade class were featured in a short article about this grant in the May Edition of the Five Star Journal (page 3). The photo seen here is of Deb Haviland, Director of the Education Foundation, Mr. Terrill, Mrs. Lott, David Bonnsett, Director of IT, and Julie Bowline, Director of IT and Library Services. A few tech saavy fifth graders are also in the snapshot.
