October News from the Library!

Well, the school year is most certainly up and running in the Riverdale Library! Here are a few updates for the month!
Book Fair Success!
We would like to offer a GIANT thank you to the Riverdale community! During the week of conferences and the Pumpkin Run, we sold 621 books to students, families, and staff members! We didn’t quite reach our goal of selling 650 books, but we consider it an “Out of this World” success anyway! Students enjoyed hearing a space riddle each day and 12 lucky students won free books from the book fair from their correct riddle guesses. Many teachers received books for their class libraries from students and families as well! We were able to purchase 45 books from the book fair for the library and will still have about $1,500 worth of books to purchase through Scholastic for the remainder of the year. Thank you for your support of the Riverdale Library during the book fair!

Student Destiny Accounts
Did you know that 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th grade students and staff can create their own account in our library’s system called Destiny? In just a few minutes, students and staff can have access to their accounts so that they can see materials they have checked out and their due dates! In addition, you can build personal reading lists, recommend books to other people who have accounts, and post book reviews for the entire district to see! As far as library systems go, Destiny is pretty forward thinking in offering these social media tools! Stop by and see us if you are interested in creating an account!

CCBA
Each year, students across the state of Colorado are encouraged to read titles that are nominated for the Colorado Childrens’ Book Award! This year we have 20 fabulous books—10 picture books and 10 junior novels—to choose from! Voting will be difficult because so many of them are great choices! All of the titles are available for check out in the Riverdale Library! In February, students will have the chance to vote for their favorite book. In order to vote, students need to have read or heard 3 of the titles. Stop by and see us if you are interested in reading the CCBA titles for this year!

Circulation and Statistics
We have been as busy as ever in the library this year! We worked with Mrs. Walp’s kids for animal inquiry/PhotoStory projects, introduced first graders to TumbleBooks, helped 2nd graders navigate the library and created Destiny accounts with them too! We have also been working with a group of students in Ms. DeYoung’s class on inquiry projects and have used the 10 iPads with the Kindergartners and Fish and Frog preschool classes! We have also supported 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes in selecting their book project titles based genres (mystery, adventure, and fantasy). This is all in addition to the numerous walk-in students we see each day! The heart of a successful library program is the ability to impact the learning going on in the school on a frequent basis. It is a wonderful feeling to contribute to student success at Riverdale!

Notable Statistics
Books checked out in October: over 2,300!  Books Checked out since the start of the year: over 7,350!

New Books are on their Way
In addition to the new books we have from the book fair, we have over 100 new books from a recent book order from Mackin. We recently placed an order with Rainbow Books as well. We will be expecting to have our order of about 165 new titles just after winter break! Stop in and see us if you are interested in checking out a new book!

Be sure to check back with us next month!  Thanks for reading our blog!
